Brazil’s Novas Frequências Experimental Music Festival Coming To The UK

By 03 March, 2015

The Novas Frequências festival of experimental Brazilian music will soon be coming to the UK. Curated by Chico Dub, the festival has become a mainstay of Rio de Janeiro’s music scene since 2011, documenting the experimental music scene happening in Brazil, and bringing some of the masters of outsider music to Brazil. For its first ever UK edition it will bring the combined greatness of Chinese Cookie Poets and Negro Leo to Glasgow and London.

If you’ve read our Sounds and Colours Brazil book you will know all about the avant-garde musical scene happening in Rio de Janeiro and especially about two of its main proponents, Negro Leo (a psychedelic poet/troubadour in the vein of pre-exile Caetano Veloso) and Chinese Cookie Poets (a heavy mix of free jazz and potent rock). It will crown a great couple of years for Novas Frequências in which they brought such acts as Stephen O’Malley, Tim Hecker, Ben Frost, Actress, Sun Araw and Julianna Barwick to the 4th edition of their Rio-based festival in December 2014, and also for Chico Dub whose Hy Brazil compilations have been introducing Brazil’s forward-thinking music-makers to the world.

Novas Frequências UK Showcase (featuring Negro Leo and Chinese Cookie Poets) will be coming to Glasgow’s Conterflows Festival on April 2nd and London’s Café Oto on April 4th.
