Brazil’s Orquestra Contemporânea de Olinda, Colombia’s La-33 and Peru’s Novalima to perform at New York’s globalFEST 2011

By 05 January, 2011

globalFEST, held in New York City every year, aims to be a springboard for global music in North America. One of the great things about this one-day festival is the sheer breadth of artists on show. There are acts coming from Haiti, France, Cuba, Mali, Congo, Hawaii, India and Senegal. This marks it out as being something a little different to many other world music events which stick largely to the Africa and Cuba. Obviously, the most exciting for us are the three artists coming from South America.

Orquestra Contemporânea de Olinda, from the Recife state of Brazil, are a cross between contemporary rock band and traditional brass band. With it being North-eastern Brazil, there’s also a strong drum flavour. It’s effervescent in all the ways that music should be.

La-33 from Bogota in Colombia are a self-styled salsa band, carrying through with their own Colombian style. The key for any band that wants to get you on your feet is control, and La-33 have it in abundance, able to take their audience on a musical journey through the more dance-friendly Latin world.

Novalima are a band we’ve featured before. Using Afro-Peruvian music as their source they have crafted an electronic/world music crossover. Their appeal lies in their ability to blend Peruvian folk music (with an African heritage) with electronic beats, albeit ones that are augmented with plenty of percussion.

Novalima – Coba Guarango
